Get stronger, get fit, and learn how to protect yourself, at any age

The Short Answer

Strength training and boxing are one of the best combinations a woman can train. Strength training builds muscle, bone, and everyday power. Boxing adds cardio, coordination, and practical self-defense skills: balance, distance, protecting your head, and staying calm under pressure.

You don't need experience, a certain fitness level, or a certain age to start. At Wolfpack Boxing Club in Miami, women train in coed classes or one-on-one with Coach Jake, and your first class is free.

Most women we meet want three things: to feel strong, to get in real shape, and to know they could handle themselves if they ever had to. Strength training and boxing cover all three, and they work even better together.

Why Should Women Strength Train?

Muscle is what keeps you strong, steady, and independent as the years go on: carrying groceries, lifting a suitcase, getting up off the floor, keeping your balance. Strength training is also one of the best-known ways to support bone health, which matters more for women as they age.

Strength training at Wolfpack is functional, not bodybuilding. It's built on the same standard we hold in boxing: proper form first, weight added gradually, no shortcuts. And no, it won't make you bulky. Women who train consistently tend to see changes in tone, posture, and energy, not size.

Is Boxing Good Self-Defense for Women?

Boxing gives you real tools, and just as important, the confidence to use them. Here's what boxing training builds:

  • A solid stance. Balance that's hard to knock off, so you stay on your feet.
  • Distance and movement. Knowing how far is too close, and how to step out of range.
  • Protecting your head. Keeping your hands up becomes a habit instead of an afterthought.
  • Strikes that actually land. Punching with your legs and hips, not just your arms.
  • Staying calm under pressure. Training teaches your body not to freeze when things get intense.

One honest note: the goal of self-defense is always to get away safely. Boxing helps you create space, protect yourself, and move. Pair that with awareness, and it adds up to real confidence walking to your car at night.

Is Boxing a Good Workout for Women?

It's one of the most complete workouts there is. A boxing class works your legs, core, shoulders, and back, and rounds on the bag and pads build serious cardio. Because you're learning a skill at the same time, the hour goes fast. Many women tell us it's the first workout they actually look forward to.

What You Want Strength Training Boxing
Muscle & bone strength Builds it directly Supports it
Cardio & endurance Some A lot
Self-defense skills More power behind every move Builds them directly
Balance & coordination Yes Yes
Confidence Yes Yes

Do both and each one makes the other better: stronger legs and core put more power in your punches, and boxing's footwork and conditioning carry over to every lift.

Am I Too Old to Start?

No. We train women in their 20s and women in their 70s, and the approach is the same: start where you are, learn proper form, and build week by week. Here's how one of our members put it in her Google review:

“He is passionate about the body getting stronger, proper forms, safety, consistency. I am 72 yrs old and feel better and stronger than I was 5 yrs ago. All thanks to Coach Jake.”

Strength doesn't have an age limit. Consistency and good coaching matter far more than where you're starting from.

Should I Start in a Group Class or One-on-One?

Either works. Our classes are coed, beginner-friendly, and focused on effort, not intimidation. If you'd rather build your fundamentals and confidence first, one-on-one sessions with Coach Jake are a great place to start. He has a strong track record of strength training with women, and one-on-one lets every session go at your pace.

FAQ

Is strength training good for women?

Yes. Strength training builds muscle, supports bone health, and makes everyday tasks easier, especially as women age. At Wolfpack it's functional training with proper form first and weight added gradually.

Will lifting weights make women bulky?

No. Women who strength train consistently tend to see changes in tone, posture, and energy, not size. Building bulk takes a very specific kind of training and eating that functional strength training isn't.

Is boxing good self-defense for women?

Boxing teaches practical self-defense skills: a balanced stance, managing distance, protecting your head, punching with your whole body, and staying calm under pressure. The goal is always to create space and get away safely, and boxing builds the confidence to do that.

Am I too old to start boxing or strength training?

No. Wolfpack trains women from their 20s into their 70s. Coaches start where you are, teach proper form, and build gradually. One of our members, 72, says she feels stronger than she did five years ago.

Are your classes women-only?

Classes at Wolfpack are coed and beginner-friendly. If you'd rather start one-on-one, private sessions with Coach Jake let you build fundamentals and confidence at your own pace.

Is the first class free?
